Keith Fulmer Art & Design Schol

This endowment was established to honor the life of Keith Edward Fulmer who was an artist and craftsman who worked across many media, from stone to metal and wood. He especially enjoyed furniture-making and woodturning where he challenged himself to new creative and technical achievements. As a youth, Keith did not have a lot of experience or exposure to the visual arts and often struggled with reading and writing. Social promotion moved him from one grade to the next. As a high school senior, however, he ended up retaking a semester of 9th grade English. A successful athlete, Keith also enjoyed philosophy because it appealed to his analytical nature, as did science and math. He went on to Kent State but the heavy reading requirements combined with a family relocation
led him to move to upstate New York where he met his future wife, Mara. After Keith revealed his educational challenges to her, Mara encouraged him to complete an adult reading course which led to a voracious reading habit. His visual competencies were put to use in practical ways through studies in Airframe and Powerplant mechanics where he graduated at the top of his class. He had an innate ability to look at diagrams, and examine and understand how things worked, understanding how they were designed, or created. In 1991, Keith moved overseas with his wife and two daughters to live in Fiji where he found new inspiration in the beauty of nature, both above and below the water, for his creative work. As his artistic abilities were nurtured, he found satisfaction working in a variety of materials, and eventually, with encouragement from his wife, a few years after the family’s move to Michigan in 1997, he made woodworking and furniture-making his full-time work. He soon discovered woodturning, taking it to new artistic heights, exploring new techniques, eventually
showing his work in galleries and art fairs. Keith passed away in 2012 after a brief battle with cancer. His wife and two grown daughters, Sarah and Anastassia, all work in fields related to the creative arts. This memorial scholarship is meant to encourage students to find and grow in their creative voice, even in the face of life’s challenges.
